OceanLab and The Script

Check out a couple great bands with new hits droppin' this week:

Trance is alive and well with British group OceanLab featuring lead singer Justine Suissa. The group has been big across the band for a decade now and has found its way into the club scene here in the states over the past couple years. "On A Good Day" may be their first taste of mainstream success.

When I first heard a tune by The Script I thought that this band had to have been influenced by U2 and the Police. Sure enough. What I didn't know is that they have been around since 1996 (originally as Mytown) and actually are from U2's home Dublin, Ireland. Their self-titled album just crashed the Billboard Top 200 in the Top 10 and the first single, "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" is making waves at Triple A radio after a very successful run in Ireland.

Check them both out on iTunes!

Rock-It! 4-26-09, Lady GaGa Two of a Kind, Kelly Hooks Big Move

Lady GaGa has returned to the top of the pop chart with her second #1 hit of 2009. She becomes the first artist to have two chart toppers this year with “Poker Face” which holds at #1 for a second week. She spent two weeks at #1 in January with her first hit, “Just Dance”. The 22-year old New York sensation had already joined Colbie Caillat, Katy Perry and Leona Lewis as female vocalists to take their first two hits to the Top 5 in the past 12 months. Lady GaGa is the first to take both to #1.

The Black Eyed Peas are back in the Top 3 for the first time since soaring to #3 four years ago with “Don’t Phunk With My Heart”. This week the L.A. quartet leaps from 7-3 with “Boom Boom Pow”. The song is the first release from their new album “The END” which drops in June. The 7-3 jump is the largest move into the #3 spot since Ne-Yo rocketed from 7-3 with “Closer” last August. That song went on to reach #2. The Peas are hoping to do better and score their first #1 hit since their first single, “Where Is The Love” topped the pop chart in 2003.

18-year old Chicago rapper Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em peaked at #8 in 2007 with “Crank That (Soulja Boy)”. Many thought the rapper was doomed to be a one-hit wonder, but he has proven us wrong by returning to the Top 10 with “Kiss Me Thru The Phone” featuring Sammie. This week the song holds at #6 for a second week. He is also up from 66-60 this week with “Turn My Swag On”.

Up from 9-8 is Jesse McCartney who makes his third career Top 10 appearance with “How Do You Sleep” featuring Ludacris. This is the 22-year old New York star’s first Top 10 trip since going to #1 with the top song of 2008, “Leavin’”.

Spending a second week at #10 is Britney Spears with “If U Seek Amy”. It is Britney’s 13th Top 10 hit and third from her current album “Circus”. The first two, “Womanizer” and “Circus” both reached #1.

There is one new song in the Top 20 this week. Dance group 3Oh!3’s “Don’t Trust Me” moves from 22-19. The former #1 club hit by the new band from Denver first released the song last summer.

This week’s biggest moving song is from Kelly Clarkson. The original American Idol’s 12th Top 40 hit is “I Do Not Hook Up” and this week the song pushes forward from 37-25 in only its second week in the Top 40. It’s the follow up to Kelly’s #1 smash “My Life Would Suck Without You” which slides from 4-6 this week.

There are four new songs in the Top 40 this week, all by established Top 40 superstars. Pink leads the way by rocketing in at #27 with “Please Don’t Leave Me”. This is Pink’s 16th Top 40 hit and follow up to the #4 hit “Sober” which broke a string of three straight #1’s for the superstar. Bowing right behind Pink at #28 is Eminem with “We Made You”. This is Eminem’s 15th Top 40 hit has a headline artist.

Coming in at #39 is another Top 40 effort for Kanye West. “Paranoid” featuring Mr. Hudson . This is Kanye’s 12th Top 40 hits as a headline artist. And landing at #40 with their 11th Top 40 hit is Canadian superstar outfit Nickelback with “If Today Was Your Last Day”. It is the follow up to the #12 smash “Gotta Be Somebody” which broke a streak of five straight Top 10 hits for the band.

Not a bad debut class when all four are by acts who have had double digit hit songs!

Other chart information of note this week:
It appears that Ciara’s “Love Sex Magic” featuring Justin Timberlake has peaked at #12 as it slips from 12-16 this week. A definite disappointment!
“Poker Face” spends its second week at #1 on the pop chart and its 13th week at #1 on the Dance Chart for a Rock-it! record.
“I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz and “Let It Rock” by Kevin Rudolf featuring Lil Wayne tie for oldest song honors this week at 34 weeks.

My iTunes new picks of the week:
“He Reigns”, Bernie Williams
“On A Good Day”, OceanLab
“Halo (Dave Aude Club Remix)”, Beyonce
“The Man Who Can’t Be Moved”, The Script
“The Motions”, Matthew West
“Waking Up In Vegas”, Katy Perry

Dan Deacon

Hey everyone. Check out Dan Deacon. His latest album "Bromst" just debuted on the Billboard 200. It is a mix of electronic music, world music influences and all sort of interesting stuff. I am really enjoying the tune "Of The Mountains". It's very different stuff.

Rock-It! 4-19-09, Lady GaGa lands face up, Britney lucky #13

Lady GaGa has returned to the top of the pop chart with her second #1 hit of 2009. She becomes the first artist to have two chart toppers this year with “Poker Face” which jumps from 2-1. Lady GaGa is the first to take both to #1.

T.I. is up from 5-3 this week with “Dead And Gone” featuring Justin Timberlake. His chart success has come in spite of his legal problems. T.I. will begin a one-year prison sentence due to possession of illegal firearms presumably this summer. He has been in house arrest since last year but has still managed three Top 3 hits: “Whatever You Like” and “Live Your Life” last year and now “Dead And Gone”.

18-year old Chicago rappr Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em peaked at #8 in 2007 with “Crank That (Soulja Boy)”. He is also up from 72-66 this week with “Turn My Swag On”.

The Black Eyed Peas are also up a notch this week from 8-7 with “Boom Boom Pow”. It is their eighth Top 10 hit and first since peaking at #10 with “Pump It” in 2006. This is their biggest hit since 2005 when they reached #4 with “My Humps”. Their new album “The END” is due out in June.

There is one new song in the Top 20 this week. 25- year old electro-hop newcomer Kid Cudi is up from 23-19 with “Day ‘N’ Nite”. The Cleveland rapper is also in the Top 5 on the dance chart this week with the same tune.

Speaking of dance hits, this week’s biggest mover in the pop Top 40 is dance group 3Oh!3’s “Don’t Trust Me”. The former #1 club hit by the new band from Denver shoots up from 31-22 this week.

There is only one new song in the Top 40 this week. It is the second Top 40 hit from Kelly Clarkson’s new album “All I Ever Wanted”. Kelly is in at #37 with “I Do Not Hook Up”. The first release, “My Life Would Suck Without You” already spent three weeks at #1.

Other chart information of note this week:
Now this week’s Top 5 dance songs are in the pop Top 40, a rarity.
In addition to “Poker Face” hitting #1 this week, it holds at #1 on the Dance Chart for a Rock-it! record 12th week.

Ting Tings

I know its not musically interesting, but that hasn't stopped me from enjoying certain songs before. And for some reason I have grown very attached to the first two releases from the Ting Tings: "Shut Up And Let Me Go" and now "That's Not My Name". I guess in some ways I like the rhythmic aspects to both tunes and also the layering at the end of "That's Not My Name". But quite honestly, it's just cuz the tunes are fun.

Rock-It! 4-12-09, Flo Rida right on top, Peas boom into Top 10

It was about this time last year that Florida native Flo Rida charged to the top of the pop chart with his first release, “Low” featuring T-Pain. Well, this week Flo Rida holds at #1 with his second #1 hit with “Right Round” featuring Ke$ha. Flo Rida also has the week’s biggest moving song with “Sugar” featuring Wynter which moves from 39-32. His new album, “R.O.O.T.S.” also debuts in the Top 10 this week on the album chart.

New York star Lady GaGa moves from 3-2 with “Poker Face” as she looks to score her second consecutive #1 smash. It’s the follow up to her #1 debut single “Just Dance”. “Poker Face” is currently in its 11th week as the #1 dance song in the land. That is the longest run at #1 since the Rock-It! Dance chart was revived in 2005. Lady GaGa also joins Colbie Caillat, Katy Perry and Leona Lewis as female stars who have watched their first two releases hit the Top 5 in the last year.

T.I. is up from 6-5 this week with “Dead And Gone” featuring Justin Timberlake. T.I. has now scored three Top 5 hits in a row with “Whatever You Like” which hit #3 last November and then “Live Your Life” featuring Rihanna which started 2009 at #1.

Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em peaked at #8 in 2007 with “Crank That (Soulja Boy)”. Many thought the rapper was doomed to be a one-hit wonder, but he has proved us wrong by returning to the #8 position last week with “Kiss Me Thru The Phone” featuring Sammie. This week the song holds at #7. He is also up from 82-72 this week with “Turn My Swag On”.

Riding a wave of digital sales in its first week of availability, the Black Eyed Peas are back in the Top 10 this week with a 12-8 move from “Boom Boom Pow”. And holding at #10 is Jesse McCartney who makes his third career appearance with “How Do You Sleep” featuring Ludacris. This is his first Top 10 trip since going to #1 with the top song of 2008, “Leavin’”.

Three songs storm into the Top 20 this week. 41-year old actor/singer Jamie Foxx falls one notch short of having the biggest mover in the Top 40 for a second time in three weeks as he rockets from 23-17 with “Blame It” featuring T-Pain. This is the Texas native’s biggest hit has a lead artist. He has been to the Top 10 twice as featured artist including on Kanye West’s 2005 #1 hit “Gold Digger”. Florida rock quartet Shinedown scores their first Top 20 hit this week with “Second Chance” which moves from 22-18. Another Texas native is up from 21-19 this week. 27-year old Beyonce scores her 11th solo Top 20 hit with “Halo”. It’s the follow up to the #1 smash “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”.

Three songs debut in the Top 40 this week. California rock band The Offspring leads the charge with their first Top 40 hit in ten years. In 1999 they peaked at #20 with “Why Don’t You Get A Job?”. Rock-It! 4-5-09, Flo Rida back on top

It was about this time last year that Florida native Flo Rida charged to the top of the pop chart with his first release, “Low” featuring T-Pain. Well, this week Flo Rida scores his second #1 hit with “Right Round” featuring Ke$ha as the song spins up from 2-1. Ironically, “Low” slides out of the Top 100 after a 73-week run. Flo Rida also debuts in the Top 40 this week with “Sugar” featuring Wynter at #39.

Kelly Clarkson slides to #2 this week with “My Life Would Suck Without You”. This isn’t the first time the song has slid from #1 though. It hit the top spot seven weeks ago before being knocked to #2 for four weeks but then returned to #1 the past two weeks. The song is still gaining airplay so don’t count it out of the mix to return. However, the second release from the #1 album in the country, “All I Ever Wanted” debuts in the Top 100 at #54 this week, “I Do Not Hook Up”.

New York star Lady GaGa moves from 4-3 with “Poker Face” to score her second Top 3 hit. It’s the follow up to her #1 debut single “Just Dance”. “Poker Face” is currently in its fifth week as the #1 dance song in the land. Lady GaGa also joins Colbie Caillat, Katy Perry and Leona Lewis as female stars who have watched their first two releases hit the Top 5 in the last year.

Not that the All-American Rejects are complaining but despite two weeks of airplay gains, the band has dropped from 1-3 and now 3-4 with “Gives You Hell”. Fortunately, they got two good weeks in with their first ever #1 hit before this barrage of hot songs made their way to the top of the survey.

The Fray’s self-titled second LP has already hit #1. And the first single, “You Found Me” holds at #5 on the singles chart for a fourth week. It is also the Colorado band’s third Top 5 single. In 2006 they hit #4 with “Over My Head (Cable Car)” and #2 with “How To Save A Life”. “You Found Me” is also moving up the Top 20 Christian chart this week.

T.I. holds at #6 for a third week with “Dead And Gone” featuring Justin Timberlake. T.I. has now scored three Top 10 hits in a row with “Whatever You Like” which hit #3 last November and then “Live Your Life” featuring Rihanna which started 2009 at #1.

This week the song tops his previous peak by moving from 8-7.

Holding at #9 is Akon with “Beautiful” featuring Kardinal Offishall and Colby O’Donis. This is Akon’s 12th appearance in the Top 10 since his debut in 2004. His lone trip to #1 came in 2007 when he was featured on Gwen Stefani’s “The Sweet Escape”.

There is one new song in the Top 10 this week. Jesse McCartney makes his third career appearance with “How Do You Sleep” featuring Ludacris. This is his first Top 10 trip since going to #1 with the top song of 2008, “Leavin’”. His current hit moves from 11-10 this week.

And watch out for the Black Eyed Peas’ new song “Boom Boom Pow” which jumps from 15-12 this week. The song just had its digital release this weekend which means it could make a big jump into the Top 10 next week.

The biggest mover within the Top 40 this week is the hip hop/dance debut single by Ohio-based Kid Cudi. This week he leaps from 34-26 with “Day ‘N’ Nite”.

Three songs debut in the Top 40 this week. British duo The Ting Tings follow up their #37 hit from last September, “Shut Up And Let Me Go”, with “That’s Not My Name” which comes in at #36. Kevin Rudolf is also scoring his second hit this week. “Let It Rock” soared to #5 last November and is still hangin’ in at #24. This week he bows at #37 with “Welcome To My World”. And as mentioned earlier, Flo Rida debuts at #39 with “Sugar” featuring Wynter.

Other chart information of note this week:
Not a good week for the Pussycat Dolls. They have two songs slide out of the Top 40 this week: “I Hate This Part” and “Jai Ho!”.
Lil Wayne is featured on back to back hits this week. He’s on Kevin Rudolf’s “Let It Rock” at #24 and Keri Hilson’s “Turnin Me On” at #25.
“I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz and “Let It Rock” by Kevin Rudolf featuring Lil Wayne tie for oldest song honors this week at 31 weeks.

My iTunes new picks of the week:
“That’s Not My Name”, The Ting Tings
“More”, Tyrone Wells
“Takin’ Back My Love”, Enrique Iglesias with Ciara
“Falling Anthem”, Bad Boy Bill
“The Search Within”, Sean Jones
