Rock-It! 5-31-09, 2nd Pow For The Peas, Gleeful Return For "Believin'"

Ten Top 10 hits and multiple solo project successes, but unbelievably, this is the Black Eyed Peas first trip back to #1 since 2003 when they reached the top of the pop chart with their first Top 10 hit, “Where Is The Love?”. This week they spend their second week at #1 with “Boom Boom Pow”. They also debut in the Top 100 this week with “I Gotta Feeling” and “Imma Be”, both from their upcoming album “The END”.

Holding at #3 is 41-year old Texas R&B singer Jamie Foxx who has already been to #1 featured on Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” in 2005. “Blame It” featuring T-Pain becomes Jamie’s first hit as a headline artist to go Top 3.

Moving from 6-4 is Beyonce with “Halo”. This is the 27-year old Houston superstar’s seventh Top 5 solo hit. She is looking to make it her second straight #1 following up “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”. She has already had five solo #1 hits. The other four: “Irreplaceable” (2006), “Check On It” (2006), “Crazy In Love” (2003) and “Baby Boy” (2003). If you check out the pattern she is due for another #1 hit this year.

Florida rock quartet Shinedown hold at #5 with their first Top 5 hit this week with “Second Chance” which is their second Top 40 hit. Their first, “I Dare You”, reached #32 in 2006.

The Boulder, Colorado band, 3Oh!3, named after the area code from their hometown (303), have scored its first Top 10 hit. “Don’t Trust Me” leaps from 8-6. It already has gone to #1 on the club dance chart.

Taking a cue from its title, Miley Cyrus climbs from 10-7 with “The Climb”. The song is from her hit movie “Hannah Montana: The Movie Soundtrack”. This is her second Top 10 hit. She reached #2 last year with “See You Again”.

Kelly Clarkson’s tenth Top 10 hit moves from 9-8 this week. “I Do Not Hook Up” is the follow up to her #1 smash “My Life Would Suck Without You”. Kelly is looking to make this her sixth #1 hit. The other four: “Miss Independent” (2003), “Breakaway” (2004), “Since U Been Gone” (2005), “Behind These Hazel Eyes” (2005) and “Because Of You” (2005).

The Top 10 is full of female star power this week with Fergie of Black Eyed Peas, Lady GaGa (at #2 with “Poker Face”), Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears (who slips from 7-9 this week with “If U Seek Amy”). And this week Pink joins the party with “Please Don’t Leave Me”. This is the third Top 10 hit from her album “Funhouse”. It is her 13th career Top 10 hit. Like Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson, she is looking to make it her sixth #1 hit.

28-year old Armando Christian Perez who goes by Pitbull has the biggest mover within the Top 40 this week with “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)”. The Cuban-American rapper out of Miami is up 20-14 this week.

There are two new songs in the Top 20 this week. Lady GaGa is at it again as she jumps from 22-19 with “LoveGame”. The New York sensation is looking to make it three straight #1 hits to start her career. She has already reached the top this year with two songs that are still in the Top 40 this week “Just Dance” (at #27) and “Poker Face” (at #2).

And making a nice move from 25-20 is Jamaican R&B/hip hop star Sean Kingston with “Fire Burning”. This is Sean’s fourth Top 20 hit.

Three songs debut in the Top 40 this week. The highest comes from the new FOX musical comedy “Glee” which premiered after “American Idol” a couple weeks ago. The cast from “Glee” which is about a high school show choir enters at #34 this week with their remake of Journey’s 1981 #9 hit “Don’t Stop Believin’”.

Speaking of “American Idol”, the song that debuts at #35 was premiered on “American Idol” earlier this month. It’s the latest by former Idol contestant Chris Daughtry. His band Daughtry enters at #35 with “No Surprise” from the upcoming album “Leave This Town”.

And bowing at #36 is “New Divide” by Linkin Park” from the new “Transformers” movie. This is the seventh Top 40 hit for the California band.

Other chart information of note this week:
No “American Idol” songs from the new winners enter the Top 40 which is a rarity the week after the champions are crowned. New Idol, Kris Allen falls just short by entering the Top 100 at #41 with “No Boundaries”. He also comes in at #46 with “Heartless”. Runner-up Adam Lambert’s highest entry is “Mad World” at #49.
A week after All-American Rejects dropped from 4-11, Flo Rida slides from 4-12 with “Right Round”.
“Let It Rock” by Kevin Rudolf featuring Lil Wayne and “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz tie for oldest song honors this week at 39 weeks which is nine months. The songs are at #39 and #40 respectively this week.

Rock-It! 5-24-09, A Black Big Boom, GaGa's New Game

Ten Top 10 hits and multiple solo project successes, but unbelievably, this is the Black Eyed Peas first trip back to #1 since 2003 when they reached the top of the pop chart with their first Top 10 hit, “Where Is The Love?”. This week they return to #1 with “Boom Boom Pow” which lands at the top spot after three weeks at #2. It is from their new album “The END” which drops next month.

Up from 5-3 is 41-year old Texas R&B singer Jamie Foxx who has already been to #1 featured on Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” in 2005. This week his hit “Blame It” featuring T-Pain becomes his first hit as a headline artist to go Top 3.

Florida rock quartet Shinedown score their first Top 5 hit this week with “Second Chance” which is their second Top 40 hit. Their first, “I Dare You”, reached #32 in 2006. This week “Second Chance” moves from 6-5.

Making a nice move from 8-6 is Beyonce with “Halo”. This is the 27-year old Houston superstar’s eighth Top 10 solo hit.

A lot of new songs making big moves at the bottom of the Top 10 this week. Jumping from 13-7 is “If U Seek Amy” by Britney Spears. The song just spent two weeks at #8 before dropping to #13 last week. This week the song rebounds to a new peak.

The Boulder, Colorado band, 3Oh!3, named after the area code from their hometown (303), scores its first Top 10 hit this week. “Don’t Trust Me” leaps from 12-8. It already has gone to #1 on the club dance chart.

Kelly Clarkson notches her tenth Top 10 hit this week as she moves from 11-9 with “I Do Not Hook Up”. It is the follow up to her #1 smash “My Life Would Suck Without You” which slides out of the Top 10 this week. Kelly is looking to make this her sixth #1 hit. The other four: “Miss Independent” (2003), “Breakaway” (2004), “Since U Been Gone” (2005), “Behind These Hazel Eyes” (2005) and “Because Of You” (2005).

And making a huge “climb” into the Top 10 this week is “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. The teen star rockets from 19-10 a week after dropping from an apparent #14 peak. The song becomes her second Top 10 hit. Last year Miley hit #2 with “See You Again”.

Not only is the Top 10 greeting three new songs this week but so is the Top 20. 19-year old Pasadena, California newcomer Kristinia Debarge has gotten off to a nice start with her first hit, “Goodbye”. She made the biggest move in the Top 40 last week by jumping from 37-25 in her second week on the survey. And this week she leaps from 25-18.

Fellow California star Katy Perry is right on Kristinia’s heels as she moves from 23-19 with “Waking Up In Vegas”. This is Katy’s fourth consecutive Top 20 hit to start her career. One of those, “Hot N Cold”, reached #1 and slips out of the Top 40 this week.

28-year old Armando Christian Perez who goes by Pitbull rounds out the new Top 20 hits with his very first Top 20 smash, “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)”. The Cuban-American rapper out of Miami is up from 21-20 this week.

On top of all the new entries in the top segments of the survey, we have a huge mover in the bottom half of the Top 40. Lady GaGa soars up from 33-22 with “LoveGame” in its second week in the Top 40. The big move might ease the pain for Lady GaGa who slides out of the #1 position after five weeks with “Poker Face”. The New York star is also at #29 this week with her former #1 hit “Just Dance”.

And the new song parade continues as we welcome four new songs in the Top 40 this week. 21-year old Georgia newcomer Jessie James debuts at #32 this week with “Wanted”, her first Top 40 hit. Norwegian dance group Madcon also scores their first U.S. hit this week with “Beggin’” at #33. Chicago R&B newcomer Jeremih notches his first hit song with “Birthday Sex” at #34. Surprise! It's Daughtry

Daughtry has announced their new album, "Leave This Town", will drop in mid-July. The first single from that album, "No Surprise" was just released last week though. And it's another great Daughtry tune. Check it out.

Some of you might be familiary with the band Metric, out of Toronto, Canada. They've been around for over a decade. Their album "Live It Out" produced two Top 10 hits in Canada in 2006 including "Monster Hospital". They are now enjoying their first breakthrogh success in the States with "Help, I'm Alive" which is getting play at rock radio.

And then there is the band Madina Lake out of Chicago. They've been around for about four years now. They're led by twin brothers Nathan and Matthew Leone. Their album "Attics To Eden" just bowed on the Billboard 200 this week. I like the single "Living In Oblivion".

Rock-It! 5-17-09, Five Card Draw for GaGa, Goodbye's Good Move

In a year of instability at the #1 position on the pop chart, Lady GaGa has finally brought to the table the biggest hit of the year. This week she holds down the #1 spot for a fifth week in a row with “Poker Face”. It becomes the first song in 2009 to spend four weeks at the top. It is the longest running #1 hit since Pink spent five weeks on top last October and November with “So What”. The bad news: “Poker Face” slips from 1-4 on the dance chart after 15 weeks at #1.

The Black Eyed Peas are back in the Top 2 for the first time since their very first hit, “Where Is The Love” went to #1 in 2003. This week the L.A. quartet holds at #2 for a third week with “Boom Boom Pow”. The song is the first release from their new album “The END” which drops next month. This is the Black Eyed Peas’ eighth Top 10 hit and first since going to #10 in 2006 with “Pump It”. They have been to #1 once. That was in 2003 with “Where Is The Love?”.

The All-American Rejects already spent two weeks at #1 with “Gives You Hell”. The song is losing airplay and sales now but sets a unique rock era record this week by spending its seventh consecutive week at the #4 position. That has never happened before.

Up from 6-5 is 41-year old Texas R&B singer Jamie Foxx who has already been to #1 featured on Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” in 2005. This week his hit “Blame It” featuring T-Pain becomes his first hit as a headline artist to go Top 5.

Florida rock quartet Shinedown score their first Top 10 hit this week with “Second Chance” which is their second Top 40 hit. Their first, “I Dare You”, reached #32 in 2006. This week “Second Chance” leaps from 11-6. The #6 Top 10 debut is the highest since Rihanna entered at #6 in February 2008 with “Don’t Stop The Music”.

Also making a nice move into the Top 10 is Beyonce who jumps from 12-8 with “Halo”. It becomes the 27-year old Houston superstar’s eighth Top 10 solo hit. She is looking to make it her second straight #1 following up “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”.

There are no new songs in the Top 20 this week but look out for a couple hot songs closing in on the Top 10. Kelly Clarkson leaps from 16-11 with “I Do Not Hook Up”. And Flo Rida jumps from 18-14 with “Sugar” featuring Wynter. Both are looking to follow up #1 hits strongly.

The biggest mover within the Top 40 this week is “Goodbye” by Kristinia Debarge. Kristinia is the 19-year old daughter of James Debarge who led the highly successful 1980s R&B group Debarge. This week she rockets from 37-25 in her second week in the Top 40.

There is only one debut in the Top 40 this week. Lady GaGa scores her third Top 40 hit this week at #33 with “LoveGame”. Her first two hits, “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” have both hit #1. Katy Perry also re-enters the Top 40 this week at #39 with “Hot N Cold”. Her latest hit, “Waking Up In Vegas” makes a healthy jump from 29-23. It was one year ago that she debuted on the Top 40 with “I Kissed A Girl”. She has had at least one song on the survey every week since.

Other chart information of note this week:
Kelly Clarkson who had a run of 90 straight weeks with a song in the Top 10 (a rock era record) back in 2005-06 is going to most likely keep her current modest streak of 16 weeks alive as “My Life Would Suck Without You” which slips to #10 is back to back with the follow up “I Do Not Hook Up” which moves up to #11.
Sean Kingston makes an 11-notch move from 40-29 with “Fire Burning” but falls one spot shy of tying for the biggest move in the Top 40 this week.
“I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz and “Let It Rock” by Kevin Rudolf featuring Lil Wayne tie for oldest song honors this week at 37 weeks.

My iTunes new picks of the week:
“No Surprise”, Daughtry
“Help I’m Alive”, Metric
“Welcome To Oblivion”, Madina Lake
“Bleed For This Love”, downhere

Rock-It! 5-10-09, Radio GaGa, Perry Awake Again

In a year of instability at the #1 position on the pop chart, Lady GaGa has finally brought to the table the biggest hit of the year. This week she holds down the #1 spot for a fourth week in a row with “Poker Face”. It becomes the first song in 2009 to spend four weeks at the top. And it appears that she will be there for at least a couple more weeks as the song continues to get over 10,000 spins a week on radio, is selling at a Top 10 pace on iTunes and holds at #1 for a 15th week on the dance chart.

The Black Eyed Peas are back in the Top 2 for the first time since their very first hit, “Where Is The Love” went to #1 in 2003. The All-American Rejects already spent two weeks at #1 with “Gives You Hell”. But they have a big week in two ways this week. They spend their sixth consecutive week at #4. The last song to spend six weeks at any position in the Top 5 was “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis which spent nine weeks at #1 Last May and June. The Oklahoma band also moves from 57-54 this week with “The Wind Blows”.

Up from 6-5 is Jesse McCartney who makes his third career Top 5 appearance with “How Do You Sleep?” featuring Ludacris. This is the 22-year old New York star’s first Top 5 trip since going to #1 with the top song of 2008, “Leavin’”. It is his third Top 5 hit. His first was “Beautiful Soul” which peaked at #3 in 2005.

41-year old Texas R&B singer Jamie Foxx has already been to #1 featured on Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” in 2005. But this week the actor rolls up from 10-6 with his first Top 10 hit as a headline artist with “Blame It” featuring T-Pain. It becomes only the third song this year to make a 4-notch move within the Top 10. The other two: Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You” which spent three weeks at #1 and “Boom Boom Pow” which is at #2 this week.

Holding at #8 this week is Britney Spears with “If U Seek Amy”. It is Britney’s 13th Top 10 hit and third from her current album “Circus”. The first two, “Womanizer” and “Circus” both reached #1. She is trying to match Pink, the last artist to have three straight #1 hits.

There are no new songs in the Top 10 this week but two songs join the Top 20 party this week. 36-year old Massachusetts singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson scores his first Top 20 hit this week with “Come On Get Higher” which is up from 22-19. And notching her 17th Top 20 hit is Pink by climbing from 23-20 this week with “Please Don’t Leave Me”. She actually replaces herself in the Top 20 this week as “Sober” drops out.

British duo the Ting Tings have this week’s biggest mover by jumping from 33-26 with “That’s Not My Name”. It is the group’s second Top 40 hit following up “Shut Up And Let Me Go”.

Three songs debut this week in the Top 40. Katy Perry starts us off at #29 with “Waking Up In Vegas”. It becomes the 24-year old California girl’s fourth straight Top 40 hit. 19-year old newcomer Krisinia Debarge and daughter of James Debarge who led the highly successful 1980s R&B group Debarge, bows at #37 with “Goodbye”. And Sean Kingston is back at #40 this week. The Jamaican singer who reached #2 with his debut single “Beautiful Girls” in 2007 has his fourth Top 40 hit this week with “Fire Burning”.

“I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz and “Let It Rock” by Kevin Rudolf featuring Lil Wayne tie for oldest song honors this week at 36 weeks.

My iTunes new picks of the week:
“Revelation Song” by Philips, Craig & Dean
“Fire Burning” by Sean Kingston

Lots of Great Stuff This Week

It was 23 years ago this week that the Pet Shop Boys were at #2 with their first Top 40 hit "West End Girls". And now here they are droppin' a great new record this week called "Yes". It's amzing how ahead of their time this group was. Their hits of the 1980s like "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money)", "It's A Sin", "Always On My Mind" and "What Have I Done To Deserve This" would all be hits today especially in the club scene.

Ironically, another group releasing a new album this week is Depeche Mode. They come out this week with "Sounds Of The Universe". Although I'm not overly impressed with this album musically, it is definitely creative and experimental.

I'm also really liking this new downhere tune, "My Last Amen". It reminds me of a cross of Newsboys and those operatic rock anthems of the late 1970s early 1980s. It doens't hurt that there is some cool horns in it and sweet lyrics about always seeking Jesus.

There's more my friends. Dance mega star David Guetta has a great mover and shaker called "When Love Takes Over". Chekc it out! There is also this Italian band called Lacuna Coil that reminds me of Evanescence. They have a new track called "Spellbound" from a cool album called "Shallow Life" that I am really diggin'.

Finally, I kind of got wrapped up in this tune called "Here, Here And Here" by a duo called Meg & Dia. Kind of a catchy tune.

I'll be back next week giving you the best of the best new releases on the Billboard charts.

Rock-It! 5-3-09, Three Times A Lady GaGa, A Sly Foxx in Top Ten

Lady GaGa has returned to the top of the pop chart with her second #1 hit of 2009. She becomes the first artist to have two chart toppers this year with “Poker Face” which holds at #1 for a third week. She spent two weeks at #1 in January with her first hit, “Just Dance”. The 22-year old New York sensation had already joined Colbie Caillat, Katy Perry and Leona Lewis as female vocalists to take their first two hits to the Top 5 in the past 12 months. Lady GaGa is the first to take both to #1.

The Black Eyed Peas are back in the Top 2 for the first time since their very first hit, “Where Is The Love” went to #1 in 2003. This week the L.A. quartet moves from 3-2 with “Boom Boom Pow”. The song is the first release from their new album “The END” which drops in June. This is the Black Eyed Peas’ eighth Top 10 hit and first since going to #10 in 2006 with “Pump It”.

The All-American Rejects already spent two weeks at #1 with “Gives You Hell”. But they have a big week in two ways this week. They spend their fifth consecutive week at #4. The last song to spend five weeks at any position in the Top 5 was “So What” by Pink which notched five weeks at #1 last fall. The Oklahoma band also debuts in the Rock-It! Top 100 this week at #57 with “The Wind Blows”.

Up from 8-6 is Jesse McCartney who makes his third career Top 10 appearance with “How Do You Sleep?” featuring Ludacris. This is the 22-year old New York star’s first Top 10 trip since going to #1 with the top song of 2008, “Leavin’”. It is his third Top 10 hit. His first was “Beautiful Soul” which peaked at #3 in 2005.

Moving from 10-8 is Britney Spears with “If U Seek Amy”. It is Britney’s 13th Top 10 hit and third from her current album “Circus”. The first two, “Womanizer” and “Circus” both reached #1. She is trying to match Pink, the last artist to have three straight #1 hits.

41-year old Texas R&B singer Jamie Foxx has already been to #1 featured on Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” in 2005. But this week the actor scores his first Top 10 hit as a headline artist as he inches up from 11-10 with “Blame It” featuring T-Pain.

Two new songs in the Top 20 this week. Flo Rida has his fourth Top 20 hit as he moves from 21-18 with “Sugar” featuring Wynter”. This is the follow up to his #1 hit, “Sugar” featuring Ke$ha which slips from 2-3 this week. The 29-year old rapper has already had two #1 hits. His first single, “Low”, went to #1 last year.

For a second week in a row, this week’s biggest moving song is from Kelly Clarkson. The original American Idol’s 12th Top 40 hit is “I Do Not Hook Up” and this week the song pushes forward from 25-19 in only its third week in the Top 40. It’s the follow up to Kelly’s #1 smash “My Life Would Suck Without You” which holds at #7 this week.

There is only one new song in the Top 40 this week. Illinois pop quintet Plain White T’s are in at #40 with “1,2,3,4”. This is their second chart appearance. They went to #2 in 2007 with “Hey There Delilah”.

Other chart information of note this week:
After taking a small tumble last week, Fall Out Boy, The Ting Tings and The Offspring all rebound this week up four spots with their respective new hits.
“Poker Face” spends its second week at #1 on the pop chart and its 14th week at #1 on the Dance Chart for a Rock-it! record.
“I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz and “Let It Rock” by Kevin Rudolf featuring Lil Wayne tie for oldest song honors this week at 35 weeks (8 months).

My iTunes new picks of the week:
“Here, Here And Here”, Meg & Dia
“Did You See Me Coming?”, Pet Shop Boys
“Spellbound”, Lacuna Coil
“My Last Amen”, downhere
“When Love Takes Over”, David Guetta featuring Kelly Rowland
